Gregory Watt
Kansas City Criminal Defense Lawyer
“Very few defense attorneys have had the privilege of working in law enforcement; I’m thrilled I get to use that experience to assist my clients.”
– Gregory Watt

About Gregory Watt
Gregory Watt received his B.F.A. from Emporia State, M.A. from Kansas State, and J.D. from The University of Tulsa College of Law.
While at the University of Tulsa College of Law, he served as an editor of the Tulsa Journal of International Law. Also during this time, he was hired by the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office and worked under the guidance of District Attorney, Tim Harris.

Career
After leaving Tulsa, Gregory was hired by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office where he spent the next five years prosecuting a variety of crimes: misdemeanors and felonies of all stripes. It was also at the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office where Gregory realized that the people he was entrusted with prosecuting, were so much more than the case number on their file. They were folks who needed someone strong to speak some direction into their lives. They were also folks who all too often had — no hope, nor any real chance — for the simple fact that they had terrible representation in court. He ultimately left law enforcement knowing full and well that his life was about to change the lives millions of people over the course of his career as a defense attorney. And, in fact, it has.
Gregory Watt has always had a passion for learning, as well as teaching. He is an accomplished adjunct instructor with years of teaching experience for three different institutions: Kansas State, UMKC, and Metropolitan Community College. He has been published in the Missouri Bar Journal and he is routinely asked by the news media to comment on matters involving criminal law.
Gregory Watt holds advanced credentials in:
- DNA Analysis;
- Drug Recognition Expert Protocol;
- Standard Field Sobriety Testing;
- Standard Field Sobriety Instructor;
- Gas and Liquid Chromatography;
- DUI(D) Analysis;
- Forensic Drug Analysis and the use of FTIR technology;
- Advanced Roadside Impairment Driver Enforcement Protocol;
- Breath Testing; and,
- Advanced Trial Techniques.
Recognition
Gregory Watt has been recognized by both Super Lawyers Magazine and The Kansas City Business Journal for his excellence in criminal defense. He is a 2017 graduate of the National Criminal Defense College; a 2019 graduate of The National Trial Advocacy College; and, he is a 2022 graduate of the National College of Capital Voir Dire. Perhaps his most significant accomplishment in recent years was earning the title of “ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist” by the American Chemical Society. It takes an extraordinary amount of time and study to earn this designation; therefore, there are less than one hundred lawyers in the United States with this specialty.
In closing, he is the only lawyer in Kansas City called upon by the fraternal order of police in three different states to represent officers charged with crimes. And while most of his legal career has been devoted to Kansas and Missouri, he has also been retained to represent people in Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Alabama.
